Car Rental in Palawan (2026) - Driving Guide & Best Rates
Explore Palawan's impressive beaches and top attractions with hassle-free car rentals-find the perfect vehicle for your island adventure and travel at your own.
Driving Requirements
Philippine traffic law lets tourists drive on a foreign license for up to 90 days after arrival. If the license is not in English, you must also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official English translation. Rental counters in Puerto Princesa and El Nido routinely ask for one even if police rarely do.
The legal minimum age to drive any car in the Philippines is 17, but Palawan rental companies set their own higher limits, commonly 21 to 23 for cars, and 25 for larger vans or SUVs. Some firms add a young-driver surcharge below age 25, so verify age rules when you compare fleets.
Every registered vehicle must carry CTPL coverage that pays for injury or death of third parties. The rental rate normally includes this basic policy. Rental firms then offer optional collision-damage or theft coverage on top. Without it you remain personally liable for damage to the rented car.
All Palawan rental companies freeze a security hold, usually on a credit card, ranging from Budget to Premium category amounts. Debit cards are often refused. The block is released after the car is returned without damage, so bring a card with adequate available limit.
Traffic drives on the right. Turning right on red is prohibited unless a green arrow shows. At unsigned intersections the vehicle on the right has priority, and local drivers expect you to flash headlights or tap the horn, briefly, to signal overtaking on the two-lane sections of the National Highway.
Helpful Tips
Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) has several rental counters right outside arrivals, but city-center offices often match the price and throw in free pickup, handy if you're staying in town and want to inspect vehicles in daylight.
Walk a full 360° video of the car, zooming in on unpainted scratches and wheel rims. Most Palawan fleets are older and agents will flag even minor scuffs, so buying the local zero-deductible add-on is usually cheaper than risking a surprise bill.
Google Maps works on the main Puerto Princesa, El Nido corridor. But data drops north of Taytay, download the province in Google Offline or grab the free Maps.me pack before you leave town. Neither app shows sudden roadworks flagged by residents on Facebook groups.
All island rentals are full-to-full and stations close around 19:00; fill up at the 24h Shell on the south edge of Puerto Princesa before early-morning departures and top up again in Roxas before the long stretch to El Nido where pumps are scarce.
White-zone curb parking is free in Puerto Princesa proper. But red curb means no stopping and barangay tanods (watchmen) will ask for a small "watch fee" overnight, keep 20-peso coins handy; El Nido town center is permit-only, so use the paid municipal lot by the port and walk back.
Driving Warnings
Watch for sudden speed reductions on the Puerto Princesa North Road where barangay checkpoints enforce 40 km/h limits with spot fines. Daytime headlight use is mandatory outside city limits and officers do ticket for non-compliance.
During habagat season (June, Aug) the stretch between Roxas and El Nido turns to slick laterite, expect 30 km/h crawls and no guardrails on blind curves like the climb out of Taytay.
Tricycles rule the right lane on Rizal Avenue in Puerto Princesa from 07:00, 09:00 and 16:00, 18:00; overtaking them on the left inside the city is illegal and draws an on-the-spot penalty.
Random breath-testing blocks the National Highway at Barangay San Miguel most Friday nights. Refusal to blow carries an immediate ₱2,000, ₱5,000 fine and your licence stays with the station until paid.
